Manchester Terrier Association

Manchester Terrier 27/09/2020

The new restrictions and timeline set down by the Government has now cancelled all shows upto the end of the year & seems to have put a very large doubt for the shows through to March 2021. I am sure this will also have a knock on effect through ringcrafts, get togethers, seminars and the like.

Its time we should all act again, back to our cocoons and stop meeting up with friends, family, etc, the only way we will beat this.

Unfortunate, but a very sad place to be in, with all our dog activities curtailed, who knows what format they will return in, if all do return, they certainly will not be as we know them now.

I personally miss getting away in the Motorhome, we have hardly ventured out this year, apart from 12 days at Ripon. Guess I might as well SORN the mhome again.

I was really looking forward to visiting Ireland, this past weekend, where I would have had the privilege of judging my first Terrier Group at Championship show level, at the Belfast show. Gone by the way now, along with CC appointments in 5 terrier breeds this year and also a trip judging breeds in Sweden, so disappointing.

The numbers for Bournemouth were released, these were up show wise on the previous years. I was judging Manchester’s, who had an entry of 15 (same as 2019) , Parsons with a respectable 34 (20 up on 2019), both with CCs, also without tickets a great entry of 38 jacks (27 up on last year) & 3 kerries. Terriers in total had an entry of 561.

The online shows seem to go from strength to strength. With one of the original ones, that is totally free announcing to date that they have had over 60,000 entries, how awesome is that and run by two volunteers (who still get chew from exhibitors!)

Nail care in Manchesters is very important. It is surprising how many people neglect this area. I can understand that some Manchesters can be very difficult to ‘manicure’, however, this is not a reason not to keep them short. My preference on the chesters is a Dremel, after 3 or 4 times, they seem to grudgingly accept it. For me with the black nails it is difficult to gauge the cut with standard nail clippers. I recently tried the clippers on one of mine, not taking a lot off, but it erupted with blood. It did take some stopping even with copious amounts of styptic powder. As a note, flour also makes a good seal for any bleeders.

Times of trouble either brings out the worst in humans or the best, especially in the dog world. This me, me, me attitude and forcing opinions down people’s throats is conceited. What gives people the right to tell others what to think or feel and if you don’t agree, then your labelled as a £&@:#..or whatever.
There will be times in life that we do agree and others times we don’t. Some things are not just black and white, there’s a grey area which allows for mutual respect. Always remember if you have a loud voice but don’t really understand what you are talking about, somebody that does understand the whole concept will possibly just think what a loser and smile.

News from the Kennel Club Judges Education Department has been released this week, a summary below.. Work has continued on the JEP with staff working from home and Judges Committee meetings continuing to take place online. The following is just a selection of the work that has been undertaken since March :

Launch of new website. JEP documentation can still be found at www.thekennelclub.org.uk/jep You will see that the format of the documents has been brought into line with the Kennel Club’s new ‘house style’. However, the content is unchanged since these documents were last updated.

Reviewed the required updates to show regulations for 1 January 2021 (awaiting Board approval).

Processing of Mentor and Observer lists. These will be updated to the website in due course.

Work on establishing ‘grandfathering’ procedure for early 2021.

Cleansing data on the ‘Find a Judge’ website. The new site will be available from 30 September.

Mentor lists are been updated for breeds. To be a breed mentor the following are requirements.

1.     Persons who have bred/owned at least 2 UK champions in the breed (Champion or Show Champion) and awarded CCs at least 2 times.

2.     Persons who do not meet criteria 1, but are supported by at least 50% of breed clubs (except where there is one breed club and they have the support of that club) or by the breed council and the KC Judges Committee.

The BECs may wish to approach people who were previously listed as Mentors prior to the JCF review the office can provide a list of these names on request. However, please note that if individuals do not meet the new criteria they will be required to have the necessary support from breed clubs/breed council.

Observer lists are been updated for breeds. To be a breed observer the following are requirements.

1.     Persons who have bred/owned at least 3 UK champions in the breed (Champion or Show Champion) and awarded CCs at least 3 times.

2.     Persons who do not meet the criteria above but are supported by at least 50% of breed clubs (except where there is one breed club and they have the support of that club) or by the breed council and the KC Judges Committee and have been approved to award CCs in the breed. This will normally ONLY apply in breeds where there are insufficient judges qualified as above – mainly non-CC breeds and breeds that have recently gained CC status
