Manchester Terrier 29/11/2020

All this talk of Crufts seems to have lit a blue touch paper.... I myself am looking forward to it, as per usual and hopefully it will go ahead in whatever format is manageable for the organising team. Unsure if I will show, steward or a mixture of both. The expectations of some exhibitors are unreal, given the current circumstances..... We should all count our blessings.

Unless the organisers do a u-turn, it looks like no youngster at the show. Unsure how many people would want Crufts to be their puppies first show ? all that hustle and bustle, noise, etc. Some of the senior dogs do not like it , so god help a puppy (especially a manchester), not something I personally would plan on doing. It is a different environment to showing outside and also to the majority of inside shows. But everyone to their own. I personally have had five youngster here who I could have shown in different breeds, over the past months, but it wasn’t to be.

The Manchester Terrier Assoc photo competition is in full swing now on facebook, plenty of time to get your entries in for this free competition.

Good to see the Renal Failure questionnaire out and available for completion on line, please ensure you get your dogs details inputted in a timely manner, which will assist all in producing timely results.

My manchesters have already started to go into a seasonal hair loss, with 2 with bald patches above their tails already, what do people try to use to eliviate this? I have tried all types of coat remedies over the years on different breeds, some with success, but them the next time they fail. Omega star oil, Yumega, Keepers Mix, coconut oil, etc..

As we start the early build up for Christmas, please remember to keep your little friends safe! Forgetting the many issues with foods, here are some items to think about in the run up to the festivities… Silica gel - Silica gel comes in small sachets and is often found in the packaging of new shoes, handbags, cameras or electrical equipment which we unwrap over Christmas. Although it is labelled “Do not Eat” it is considered to be of low toxicity. Christmas decorations - Decorations made of plastic, paper or foil are of low toxicity although may obstruct the stomach. Glass decorationscould pose a risk if chewed or swallowed. Wrapping or crepe paper -

Ingestion may cause staining in the mouth which may look alarming, but the toxicity is considered to be low. But if your dog eats a large amount, it may cause an obstruction to the stomach. Candles - Although candles, even scented ones, are considered to be of low toxicity, ingestion could potentially block the intestine or cause choking. Potpourri - When eaten, potpourri can cause significant gastrointestinal effects in dogs. These may last several days even after the material has passed through the gut. Cigarettes - Nicotine is toxic to dogs, and cigarette butts are especially dangerous - so it's important not to leave any ashtrays in reach of dogs over Christmas, or dropped on the floor where they may eat them. Nicotine replacement patches and e-cigarette refills can also pose a risk. Symptoms of poisoning include vomiting, excess saliva and hypertension.
